10 minutes with Nick Richards - Commercial Director

What is your current role and how long have you been doing it?
I am the Commercial Director for Wirquin Ltd and have been in the role since June 2015.

What does your role entail?
I am responsible for the Sales and Marketing of the Wirquin group in the UK which covers the MacDee and Celmac brands plus a healthy own label division.

How did you get started in this industry?
I joined Jacuzzi Spa and Bath in 2007 and worked in Marketing responsible for both product and brand in various customer segments of the market including DIY, Retail, Merchant and Distribution. For the final three years my role included direct responsibility for selling too.

What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one?
I was Brand Manager for Ferrero Rocher for 3 years and Group Product Marketing Manager for Morphy Richards for 3 years too. Both roles gave me a great grounding in developing the right product and effecting marketing communications to promote it. The role at Jacuzzi added to the understanding of how this market works.

What would you like to achieve in your role?
Increased revenue and profitability for Wirquin, much of which will be achieved by an improved market understanding of the brand and its innovative product developments.

What has been the highlight of your career so far (can be more than one!)?
Landing the role of Commercial Director here at Wirquin has to top all others!
But in previous roles the development of a new brand communications strategy to re-launch the Jacuzzi brand into the retail channel with fully integrated lead generating European website was a key highlight too.

What do you see as the main issues for builders merchants and for the construction industry at the moment?
The key ones for me currently centre around post Brexit uncertainty. There’s a lack of investment and a general slow down in the market.

If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
You can’t do everything yourself, get a good team.

Football, rugby, cycling, golf or gardening – which one’s more likely to keep you busy at the weekends?
Rugby of course! In particular Doncaster Knights, a team we sponsor at Wirquin.

If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking?
A pint of lager, gin & tonic or red wine – or maybe all three!

What’s your favourite book? Favourite film?
I really enjoyed Pulp Fiction. It’s fast paced and has lots of different smaller story lines in one.

If you could be a superhero, what super-power would you choose?
Dash Parr from the Incredibles so I could get things done super fast. Being able to run on water would impress my kids too!
